Large-dog gear,
sized for the dog.

Breed labels and S, M or L tags can only take you so far. Start with your dog’s measurements, then use the size chart and fit directions for the exact item you are considering.

A note from TITAN PAW

TITAN PAW is still being set up. There are no products available to order, and this site does not take payments. This is general sizing information, not a recommendation for a particular item.

01  /  Take the measurements

Begin with a calm, standing dog.

Use a flexible tape and write down the number and unit the chart asks for. Keep the tape close without pulling it tight. The American Kennel Club’s measuring guide shows how to take these common measurements.

Chest girth
Wrap around the broadest part of the rib cage, usually just behind the front legs. Harness and coat charts commonly ask for this measurement; follow the item’s own directions for exact tape placement.
Neck girth
Measure around the part of the neck where the collar is meant to sit. For a harness, check whether its chart asks for a neck measurement and where that particular style should rest.
Back length
If a coat or other garment chart requests it, measure along the topline from the base of the neck to the base of the tail while your dog is standing.
Other details
Some item charts ask for weight or another measurement. Record only what that chart requests, using the maker’s measuring method. Do not substitute a breed name or a size label for a measurement.

02  /  Read the right chart

The chart belongs to the item.

A size name is not a measurement. Charts can ask for different parts of the body, so compare your notes with the chart for the exact style and model—not a chart from another brand or gear type.

Collars

Start with the neck measurement and the exact collar’s published range. Check the maker’s instructions for where it should sit and how snug it should be; a collar chart does not determine harness fit.

Harnesses

Use the listed chest girth and any other measurements the harness chart calls for. During a walking fit check, make sure the straps do not pinch and the harness does not impede your dog’s usual movement. The AKC harness guide describes these movement and strap-placement checks.

Coats

Match the garment chart’s requested neck, chest and back measurements. Once on, check that the garment allows your dog to walk and turn comfortably, and follow its maker’s directions for wear and care.

Crates

Compare your dog with the crate’s inside dimensions. Humane World for Animals says a crate should be large enough for a dog to stand up and turn around; see its crate sizing guidance.

03  /  Before you settle on a size

A simple fit check.

Charts narrow the choice; a calm try-on shows how that item sits on your dog. Use the manufacturer’s fitting steps for the final adjustment.

  1. Check that the size chart matches the exact item and that you are using its stated units.

  2. Measure your dog, then compare every measurement the chart asks for. Follow its instructions if your dog is between sizes.

  3. Adjust the item as directed. Look for pinching or rubbing, and check that movement is not restricted while your dog stands and walks.

  4. Recheck the fit if your dog’s body changes or the item is adjusted. Ask the maker about unclear charts or fit instructions.
